Open enrollment for 2027 health coverage is here, and for a lot of Arizonans, this is not a year to let your plan renew on autopilot. Prices are up, one major insurer is leaving, and the deadlines matter. Here's what you need to know.
The 2027 open enrollment dates for Arizona
Arizona uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. For 2027 coverage:
Enroll November 1 to December 15, 2026: coverage starts January 1, 2027.
Enroll December 16, 2026 to January 15, 2027: coverage starts February 1, 2027.
After January 15, you can generally only enroll or switch plans if you have a qualifying life event, like losing other coverage, moving, or having a baby.
You may have heard that open enrollment was going to end early this year. A 2025 federal rule would have shortened the window, but a federal court blocked that change, and CMS confirmed that HealthCare.gov will stay open through January 15, 2027. My advice: aim for December 15 anyway, so you're covered from January 1 with no gap.
What's changed for 2027
Premiums are going up again. Arizona Marketplace premiums are rising about 28% on average for 2027, one of the biggest increases in the country. That's the full price before any tax credit.
Cigna is leaving the Marketplace. Cigna is exiting Arizona's Marketplace at the end of 2026, leaving six insurers for 2027. If you have a Cigna plan, you'll need to choose new coverage.
Subsidies are less generous than a few years ago. The extra premium help that ran from 2021 through 2025 expired. Tax credits are still available in Arizona, generally for households earning above 138% and up to 400% of the federal poverty level. The good news: for those who qualify, tax credits tend to rise along with premiums, so your net cost may go up much less than the full price.
Why you shouldn't auto-renew
If you do nothing, HealthCare.gov may automatically renew you into your current plan, or a similar one if yours is going away. That can backfire. Your premium, deductible, network, and tax credit can all change from one year to the next. A plan that was a great deal in 2026 might not be in 2027.
Before you renew, check:
The new monthly premium after your tax credit.
The deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. A cheaper premium can hide a much higher deductible.
Your doctors and prescriptions. Networks and drug lists change every year.
Your income estimate. Update it so your tax credit is accurate and you avoid a surprise at tax time.
